This FREE event is part of our Local Learning Initiative at Vermilionville and is funded through grants from the National Endowment for the Arts & Decentralized Arts Funding in Louisiana.

Louisiana’s Indigenous Peoples

January; Mid-September-Early October
The State of Louisiana is home to the third largest American Indian population in the eastern United States. This exhibit features brief historical and contemporary sketches of six of these communities, including the four federally recognized nations.
 

A Tale of Two Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras Season
Learn about the vastly different, but equally meaningful ways Mardi Gras is celebrated in the city and the country. Enjoy looking at the beautiful and elaborate city costumes and fun and festive country Mardi Gras outfits.
 

Bayou Vermilion

March - April; October 
At the time the Bayou Vermilion District (BVD) was formed in the mid-1980s, the Bayou Vermilion was listed as one of the most polluted waterways in Louisiana. This exhibit will show how BVD works to keep the bayou clean and what you can do to help. 
 

Black History in the Attakapas Region

May-June
This exhibit tells the story of Louisiana’s slaves, free people of color, and Creoles. Topics include: slavery, Code Noir, education, religion, and civil rights.
 

Acadians Through the Generations

July-September
Since the 1900s,Acadians have struggled to maintain their language, culture, and heritage. This exhibit describes the evolution of the Acadian descendants from the World War II generation to the Millennials.
